Nako Village, hidden in this enchanting valley of Spiti, was a destination I was unsure I’d find. This is the smallest and peaceful village possible, where nature surrounds it, where the river of Spiti moves through, and mountains look over.
The visit of Nako is like one enters into a different world. There time moves gradually, and each moment feels memorable. If you are visiting, here are 10 things you absolutely have to do in Nako that will make your trip unforgettable.
1. Relax by Nako Lake
The first thing I did upon reaching Nako was head straight to the lake. Nako Lake is one of the most peaceful spots in the village, and it’s perfect for some quiet reflection. It isn’t a big lake, but one finds beauty in the mountain scenery surrounding it and the tress.
I spent quite some time sitting on one boulder by the lake when the sun was just set in the mountains. The calmness of the waters complementing so aptly the sky itself gave it one of those calmest experiences. The most idyllic place, then, for nature and peace lovers.
2. Go to the Nako Monastery
Nako Monastery is a must-visit place. I was struck by its beauty when I first walked into this monastery. This is a very peaceful spot with a very strong spiritual presence.
Ancient murals tell stories of Buddhism on the walls of the monastery. I sat for some time quietly in this monastery, soaking up the spiritual atmosphere. It’s a small but significant place in Nako and gives a glimpse of the village’s Buddhist heritage.
The views are also scintillating from here, with the mountains in the background and the quiet village around you.
3. Walk to the Old Temple
There is an ancient temple dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava in Nako, and it’s not very far from the monastery. The walk to the temple was an experience per se.
I walked on narrow lanes and past the fields of barley and wheat, surrounded by traditional houses. The temple itself is simple but beautiful.
When I went there, the peacefulness took over the place, and I just sat there awhile, feeling connected to its history. The whole experience was very humbling.
4. Walking Through the Villages Lanes.
One of the best things I did in Nako was to wander through its narrow lanes of the village. The village is very small, yet it has lots of character.
I was taking my time walking around, exploring its traditional mud houses, talking to friendly locals, and learning how the people of Nako live. They are polite enough to let me into their homes to take tea with them. It was just a very simple and lovely experience. And I am made so welcome by people in each place that I go through.
The life pace here is so slow and relaxed that I was reminded of the differences that exist in this kind of place.
5. Admire the Buddhist Wall Art
Nako is very famous for Buddhist wall paintings, which could be found in many of the temples and the monastic building. These historical paintings describe stories from teachings in Buddhism.
I was really astounded at the detail and richness of colour. It would amaze me to be able to see how it survives to this day in its great condition.
The monastery kept me for hours viewing those paintings and learning their backgrounds. For all those interested in art or Buddhism, the wall art in Nako is not to be missed.
6. Picnic by the River
Not too far from the village, I found a quiet spot by the Spiti River, where I decided to have a picnic. It’s a calm and peaceful place, perfect for spending a few hours away from the hustle and bustle.
It was a great place to sit back and relax because of the sound of the river flowing by and the cool breeze. I took out my food, laid down a blanket, and just enjoyed the quiet.
The view of the mountains and the river made it even more special. If you’re looking for a peaceful afternoon, a picnic by the river is a great idea.
7. Experience the Local Festival
If you are fortunate enough to come to Nako when it celebrates its local festival, you would be very lucky. I happened to come during the Nako festival, and it was just beautiful.
The whole village was celebrating the festival by dancing, music, and delicious food. People were in colorful clothing, and generally, there was a feeling of joy and elation. The whole village was full of energy, and it was like coming alive.
The festival is a great way to experience the local culture and get a sense of what life in Nako is really like.
8. Visit the Stupas Around the Village
There are several stupas (Buddhist monuments) scattered around Nako. Each one has its own story, and they all make for important landmarks.
I took a walk around the village and visited a few stupas. They are relatively quiet places, ideal to spend some time in introspection. The views of these stupas are excellent, as well, with this extensive Spiti Valley vista on all sides.
I found the stupas as quiet places wherein one can sit and take in the view of the valley along with the surroundings.
9. Go Trekking to Nearby Villages
Anyone who enjoys trekking finds some good trails in Nako. I took a short trek to the nearby village, which was one of the best parts of my trip.
The trek was tough but very rewarding. I saw some of the most beautiful landscapes during the walk: barren hills, deep valleys, and snow-capped peaks in the distance. I encountered a few locals along the way who shared stories about their lives in these remote villages.
The trek was an excellent opportunity to get close to nature and see the Spiti valley in a way that’s quite different.
10. Local Handicrafts Shopping
I always make sure to visit all the small markets in Nako before leaving, buying some souvenirs. Nako is especially famous for its woolen shawls, carpets, and wooden crafts.
I bought a beautiful woolen shawl, perfect for the cold weather in Spiti, and a small wooden carving as a keepsake.
The locals craft these items by hand, and they make for unique, meaningful gifts. If you want to take a piece of Nako home, the handicrafts here are perfect.
Final Thoughts
Nako Village is such a beautiful, serene place for anyone seeking refuge from the chaos of the city and a chance to lead a slower and peaceful way of life.
Be it a walk through the ancient monasteries, a visit to the lake, a trek to the nearby villages, or just enjoying the friendly village atmosphere, there’s something in Nako for everybody. It’s a place where time seems to come to a standstill and every moment is special.
If you ever find yourself in Spiti Valley, then certainly don’t miss the opportunity of visiting this magical village, to experience all of which it has to offer.
