How to Plan a Chandratal Trip from Manali: Route, Cost, Stay, Itinerary and Local Tips

To plan a Chandratal trip from Manali, you need to sort five things: the right month (mid June to September), a suitable vehicle (SUV or bike, not a sedan), your route through the Atal Tunnel and Gramphu to Batal road, a place to stay (campsite near the lake or night halt at Batal), and enough time (minimum 2 days, ideally 3). Want a fully planned option? Browse our Chandratal Tour Packages for ready-made itineraries from Manali. The distance is only about 120 km, but the drive takes 6 to 9 hours because of genuinely broken roads after Gramphu.

Most guides make this trip sound either terrifying or like a fairy tale. Neither is accurate. The road is rough, yes. But with the right planning, it is very doable and deeply worth it.

This article is written by the team at Travel Coffee, based on repeated on ground experience with this route. Everything here, from costs to camp suggestions to vehicle advice, is based on what we have seen work for real travellers, not copied from other websites.

Quick Answers Before You Start Planning

Is this trip worth doing?

Absolutely. Chandratal is one of the most striking high altitude lakes in India. The landscape shift once you cross the Atal Tunnel is dramatic, and the lake itself earns every hour of the drive.

How many days do I need?

Minimum 2 days, 1 night. Comfortable option is 3 days, 2 nights. A single day return is possible but tiring and not recommended.

When should I go?

Mid June to mid September. July and August are the safest months for road access and weather. September is quieter but colder.

Which route?

Manali → Atal Tunnel → Gramphu → Batal → Chandratal. About 120 to 130 km, roughly 6 to 9 hours depending on conditions.

Can anyone do this trip?

Most reasonably fit adults and older children (8 plus) can handle it. Not suitable for people with serious heart or lung conditions, very young children, or anyone expecting smooth highways and hotel rooms.

Where Exactly Is Chandratal and Why Do People Start from Manali

Chandratal is a crescent shaped lake sitting at roughly 4,300 metres in the Lahaul Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh. It sits in a valley between Kunzum Pass and Batal, surrounded by bare brown mountains that look nothing like the green Kullu Valley.

People start from Manali because it is the closest proper town with fuel, ATMs, supplies, and accommodation. Whether you are coming from Delhi, Chandigarh, or Punjab, Manali is the obvious base camp.

The other approach is from Kaza in Spiti, but that makes sense only if you are already doing a longer Spiti circuit. For a standalone Chandratal trip, Manali is the starting point that works.

Best Time to Visit Chandratal from Manali

The best time to visit Chandratal from Manali is mid June to mid September. July and August offer the most reliable road conditions and the warmest daytime temperatures. September brings fewer crowds but colder nights.

June: Early Season, Not Fully Settled

The road usually opens by mid June after snow clearance on Rohtang and Kunzum passes. Some patches of slush may still be around. Not every campsite is operational yet. Good for experienced travellers who do not mind a bit of uncertainty.

July and August: The Sweet Spot

Roads are at their best for the year. All camps near the lake are running. Days are warmer, though nights still drop near freezing. More traffic on the road, but that also means more help available if something goes wrong.

Monsoon rains do hit this stretch, especially the Gramphu to Batal section. Landslides and swollen water crossings happen. This does not mean avoid these months. Just check road updates before leaving Manali and carry flexibility in your schedule.

September: Beautiful but Cold

Thinner crowds, golden light, clear skies on good days. But temperatures drop hard after sunset. Some camps start shutting down by late September. Best for photographers and experienced mountain travellers who pack well.

October: Risky, Season Ending

Most camps close by the first week of October. Roads can shut without warning after early snow. Only attempt this if you track conditions closely and have real high altitude experience.

Manali to Chandratal Route: Step by Step

If you are a first timer, understanding the route section by section removes most of the anxiety. Here is how the drive breaks down.

Manali to Atal Tunnel South Portal (25 km)

Smooth, paved road from Manali town to the tunnel entrance. Nothing to worry about here. The Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel) is about 9 km long and takes you under the Rohtang range into Lahaul. No Rohtang permit needed for the tunnel route.

Tunnel Exit to Gramphu (25 to 30 km)

You exit near Sissu on the Lahaul side and drive back toward Gramphu. Road quality is reasonable on this stretch. Gramphu is the key junction. One road goes to Keylong and Leh, the other goes right toward Batal and Chandratal. You turn right.

Gramphu to Batal (55 to 60 km): The Real Test

This is where the road changes completely. Unpaved for most of the stretch. Loose gravel, rocks, water crossings, narrow sections where two vehicles barely fit. Some spots have no proper road surface at all. This single section can take 3 to 5 hours.

You will pass through Chatru, a small campsite settlement by the Chandra river. Good place for a tea break or even an overnight halt if you want to split the drive and acclimatise.

Batal is at the end of this stretch. A handful of dhabas, the well known Chacha Chachi dhaba, and a PWD rest house. Very basic, but an important stop on the route.

Batal to Chandratal (14 km): Narrow and Bumpy

Just before Kunzum Pass top, a narrow dirt road branches left toward Chandratal. It is 14 km of bumpy, steep, single lane track. Vehicles stop at a parking area, and from there you walk about 1 to 1.5 km on an uneven trail to reach the lake.

The campsite zone is located 2 to 3 km before the parking area. If you have booked a camp, you will stop there first.

Route note: Some people still go via Rohtang Pass instead of the tunnel. Distance is similar, but you need a separate Rohtang permit and the pass road can be unpredictable. For most travellers, the tunnel route is simpler and faster.

Manali to Chandratal Distance, Travel Time, and Real Road Conditions

The Manali to Chandratal distance is roughly 120 to 130 km. Travel time is 6 to 9 hours one way. The reason for the gap between distance and time is the road quality after Gramphu, which is broken, unpaved, and slow.

The first half of the drive (Manali to Gramphu) is manageable. The second half (Gramphu to Batal to Chandratal) is where your speed drops to 15 or 20 km per hour in places. Water crossings after rain can stall vehicles for minutes. Narrow stretches mean you wait for oncoming traffic to squeeze past.

Do not trust Google Maps timing for this route. It will tell you 4 to 5 hours. That number has no relationship with ground reality. Plan for at least 7 hours, more if it has rained recently.

Can You Do Chandratal from Manali and Back in One Day

You can, but you should not. A same day return means 14 to 18 hours of driving on some of the roughest road in Himachal, with barely an hour at the lake. No time to rest, no acclimatisation, and a tiring return in fading light.

The bigger problem is altitude. You climb from about 2,000 metres in Manali to over 4,300 metres at the lake in a few hours. Without a break to adjust, headaches, nausea, and breathlessness are common.

An overnight stay, either at a camp near the lake or at Batal or Chatru, makes the trip safer, more enjoyable, and gives you time to actually experience the place instead of just checking a box.

Best Manali to Chandratal Itinerary Options

2 Days, 1 Night (Compact but Doable)

Day 1:

Leave Manali by 5 to 6 AM. Drive through Atal Tunnel, Gramphu, Batal, and continue to the Chandratal campsite zone. Settle in. Walk to the lake in the evening light. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 2:

Morning visit to the lake if you want. Pack up and drive back to Manali. Expect to arrive by evening.

Best for: Travellers short on time who still want the camping and lake experience. Early starts are non negotiable.

3 Days, 2 Nights (Recommended)

Day 1:

Drive Manali to Chatru or Batal. Night halt. This gives your body time to adjust to altitude before pushing higher the next day.

Day 2:

Continue to Chandratal campsite. Visit the lake. Spend the evening at camp under the stars. Overnight near the lake.

Day 3:

Relaxed morning at the lake. Drive back to Manali at your own pace.

Best for: Families, first timers, anyone who does not want to feel rushed. This is the itinerary we recommend to most people.

Chandratal on a Spiti Circuit (7 to 10 Days)

If you are doing the full Spiti loop through Kaza, Key, Kibber, and other Spiti highlights, Chandratal fits perfectly on the return leg. From Kaza, you drive toward Kunzum Pass, take the Chandratal diversion, spend a night at camp, and then continue through Batal to Manali.

This is the most complete way to experience Chandratal. You see it as part of the bigger Spiti story, not as an isolated stop.

What Does a Chandratal Trip from Manali Actually Cost

Costs vary quite a bit depending on how you travel. Here is a realistic range based on what we see travellers spend.

Self Drive (Car or SUV)

Fuel for the round trip: roughly Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 depending on your vehicle. Camping near the lake: Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 per person per night (meals usually included). Add dhaba food on the road and any Rohtang permit if going over the pass.

By Bike

Fuel is cheaper, around Rs 800 to Rs 1,500 for the round trip. Add camping, meals, and keep a buffer for any emergency repair. Total budget: roughly Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000 per person for 2 days including camp stay.

Private Cab (SUV) from Manali

A round trip cab, usually a Bolero or Scorpio, runs Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 depending on season and whether the driver stays overnight. Peak July and August rates are higher. Always confirm overnight charges and fuel inclusions before booking.

Shared Group Trip

Local operators run group jeep or tempo trips to Chandratal. Per person cost is typically Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000 for 2 days with transport, one night camping, and meals. Solid option for solo travellers.

All Inclusive Package

Packages covering transport, camping, all meals, permits, and a guide usually run Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per person for a 2 day, 1 night trip. Longer packages with a Spiti extension cost more.

Budget Traveller Bottom Line

If you use shared transport, eat at road dhabas, and book a basic camp, you can manage around Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per person for 2 days.

Which Vehicle Works Best for Chandratal

SUV or 4×4: The Clear Winner

High ground clearance, sturdy suspension, and the ability to handle water crossings without drama. Bolero, Scorpio, Thar, or anything similar works well. If you are hiring a cab, insist on an SUV. Do not accept a sedan, no matter what the driver promises.

Motorcycle: Popular, but Demands Experience

Bikes handle the narrow tracks well, and fuel costs are low. But this route has serious gravel sections, water crossings, and altitude. Not for beginners. Not for pillion riders who are uncomfortable on rough mountain roads. A sturdy adventure bike like the Himalayan is ideal.

Tempo Traveller: Works for Groups, with a Catch

Fine for the Manali to Batal stretch. But the narrow Batal to Chandratal road can be tricky for a larger vehicle. Some operators drop passengers at Batal and arrange smaller vehicles for the last 14 km.

Can a Sedan Go to Chandratal?

Not recommended. The ground clearance on most sedans is too low for the Gramphu to Batal road and the Batal to Chandratal track. You risk scraping the undercarriage, getting stuck at water crossings, and expensive mechanical damage. Some sedans have made it, but calling it a good idea would be dishonest.

Where to Stay on a Chandratal Trip from Manali

Campsites Near Chandratal Lake

This is the main stay option and the reason most people do an overnight trip. Camps are set up 2 to 3 km before the lake parking area. They operate from early June to around the first week of October.

Most camps offer tents (basic to semi luxury), sleeping bags, blankets, dinner, and breakfast. Expect to pay Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 per person per night. Toilets are basic. There is no electricity at most camps. Pre book during July and August or you may not get a spot.

Batal

A couple of dhabas and a PWD rest house. Very basic. Works as a night halt if you want to break the journey and adjust to the altitude before pushing to Chandratal the next morning. Do not expect comfort here. Expect warmth, chai, and a roof.

Chatru

A small settlement before Batal with a few basic tented stays. Less developed than the Chandratal campsite zone but useful as a midway break, especially on a 3 day itinerary.

Manali (Before and After)

Most people spend a night in Manali before starting and another night after returning. Wide range of hotels, hostels, and guesthouses at every budget. Stock up on supplies here because nothing is available on the route.

Is Camping Allowed at Chandratal Lake

Yes, camping is allowed near Chandratal, but not on the lake shore. Designated campsites are located 2 to 3 km from the lake. Camping on the immediate banks is strictly prohibited to protect the ecosystem.

Authorised camp operators have forest department permissions and set up seasonal camps. If you want to pitch your own tent, check with local authorities for current rules and designated spots.

Basic camp rules: no littering, no entering the lake water, no loud music, carry all your waste back. These are enforced, and rightly so.

Reaching Chandratal Without Your Own Vehicle

There is no direct bus from Manali to Chandratal. But you still have options.

HRTC buses run from Manali toward Kaza on the Spiti road. You can ride one as far as Batal or the Chandratal road diversion. From there, either walk the remaining 14 km or find a shared vehicle going the same way.

Shared jeeps and cabs heading toward Kaza can also drop you at Batal. Per person fare is roughly Rs 500 to Rs 800.

The most practical option for someone without a vehicle is a group Chandratal trip or a package from Manali. Several local operators run these throughout the season. Transport, camping, and food are handled in one booking. No guesswork.

Altitude, Health, and Safety: What You Actually Need to Know

Chandratal is above 4,300 metres. That is serious altitude, especially if you are coming directly from the plains or even from Manali at around 2,000 metres.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is real at this height. Symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, breathlessness. Most mild cases settle with rest and water. If symptoms get worse, you need to descend. There is no hospital up there.

Practical Tips That Actually Help

Break the climb with a night halt at Chatru or Batal. Do not jump from Manali to Chandratal in one shot if you can avoid it.

Drink water constantly. Even when you do not feel thirsty. Dehydration makes altitude sickness worse.

Skip alcohol at altitude. Seriously.

Carry Diamox if your doctor approves it. Also carry basic medicines for headaches and nausea.

Tell someone your plan and expected return date. Your phone will not work after Gramphu.

Who Needs to Be Extra Careful

Anyone with heart conditions, respiratory problems, or high blood pressure should consult a doctor before this trip. Pregnant women should skip it. Children under 5 or 6 are not recommended for this altitude and road.

What to Pack for the Chandratal Trip

Warm layers

Down jacket or heavy fleece, thermals, warm socks. Nights near the lake drop well below freezing, even in July.

Rain gear

Waterproof jacket and a rain cover for your bag. Monsoon weather is unpredictable on this route.

Sturdy shoes

Trekking shoes or solid sports shoes with grip. The trail to the lake is rocky and uneven.

Sunscreen and sunglasses

UV intensity at 4,300 metres is no joke.

Personal medicines

Paracetamol, anti nausea tablets, any prescriptions, band aids, antiseptic.

Power bank

Most campsites have no charging points.

Headlamp or torch

Essential at camp after dark.

Snacks and water

Carry enough for the full drive. The only food stop between Gramphu and Chandratal is at Batal.

Cash

No ATMs exist after Manali. Everything on the route runs on cash.

ID proof and vehicle documents

Needed at checkpoints along the way.

Network, Fuel, ATM, and Food: What Is Available on This Route

Mobile Network

Works in Manali, gets patchy inside the Atal Tunnel, and dies completely after Gramphu. No signal at Batal, Chatru, or anywhere near Chandratal. Let your family know you will be unreachable for at least 24 to 48 hours.

Fuel

Last petrol pump is in Manali. Nothing after that until you return. Fill your tank full. If you are on a bike, carry a spare can. This is not optional, it is essential.

ATMs and Cash

Last ATMs are in Manali. No UPI, no card machines, no digital payments on the route. Withdraw enough for the entire trip before you leave.

Food on the Route

Batal has a couple of dhabas serving dal, rice, maggi, and chai. The Chacha Chachi dhaba has been feeding travellers on this route for decades. At campsites near Chandratal, meals are usually part of the package. Between Gramphu and Batal, there is very little. Carry your own snacks.

Common Mistakes First Timers Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Leaving Manali after 7 AM. The earlier you start, the better. 5 to 6 AM gives you daylight for the entire drive and a buffer for delays.

Believing the map distance. 120 km looks easy on paper. On this road, it is a full day’s work. Plan for 7 hours minimum.

Driving a sedan. We have seen it attempted. We have seen it end badly. Take an SUV or ride a bike. The road does not forgive low ground clearance.

Running out of cash. There is no ATM, no UPI, no card reader after Manali. Not at Batal. Not at camp. Nowhere. Carry cash.

Ignoring altitude. Going from 2,000 metres to 4,300 metres in one stretch without acclimatisation is asking for trouble. Even one night at Batal or Chatru helps.

Not booking camps during peak season. July and August fill up. Walk in spots are not guaranteed. Book ahead.

Depending on mobile data for navigation. Your phone will lose signal for most of the trip. Download offline maps before leaving Manali.

Leaving trash behind. Chandratal is a protected ecosystem. Everything you bring in, you carry out.

Who Should Do This Trip and Who Should Honestly Skip It

Go For It If

You enjoy rugged road trips and raw mountain landscapes. You are a photographer chasing dramatic light and high altitude frames. You are a biker comfortable with gravel and water crossings. You want a camping experience that feels genuinely remote. You are doing a Spiti circuit and want the best possible addition to your trip.

Skip It (or Wait) If

You have serious heart, lung, or blood pressure issues and have not cleared it with a doctor. You are travelling with very young children or elderly family members who are not used to altitude. You expect paved roads and hotel rooms. You are uncomfortable with basic or no toilet facilities.

Is Chandratal safe for families?

Yes, for families with older kids (8 plus) and adults in reasonable health. But the road and altitude make it genuinely unsuitable for toddlers, very small children, or anyone with medical vulnerabilities.

Not recommended. Most sedans do not have enough ground clearance for the broken road after Gramphu. Water crossings and rocky sections will likely damage a sedan or get it stuck.

Do I need a permit for Chandratal?

But it is not a trip you wing. The right vehicle, the right month, realistic time planning, and basic altitude awareness are the difference between a great trip and a regrettable one.
