Chandratal Tour Packages from Manali – Short Getaways, Spiti Circuits & Custom Road Trips

Flexible Chandratal tour options—from quick 2–3 day getaways to full Spiti Valley circuits, with camping, group trips, and private road journeys to match your time and travel style.

Chandratal from Manali (3 to 4 Nights)

The most direct route to the Moon Lake. You cross the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, drive through Sissu and Batal, and reach the campsite via Kunzum Pass. This is ideal for travellers with limited time who want a focused high altitude lake experience without committing to a full Spiti circuit.

Chandratal with Spiti Valley (7 to 9 Nights)

A complete circuit combining Chandratal with Kaza, Key Monastery, Kibber, Hikkim, Pin Valley, and the broader Spiti landscape. You get the lake and the valley in one continuous road trip. Available from Manali, Shimla, Delhi, and Chandigarh.

Chandratal Camping Tour (2 to 3 Nights at the Lake)

Extended time near the lake with guided walks, astrophotography sessions, and slow mornings instead of a rushed day visit. This is for travellers who came for the silence and want to actually experience it, not just photograph it and leave.

Private Chandratal Road Trip

Custom built for couples, solo travellers, or small groups who want their own vehicle, driver, and pace. You decide the stops, the speed, and how long you linger at each view. We handle the logistics and local coordination.

Chandratal Group Tour

Best Places to Visit on a Chandratal Trip

A Chandratal tour is not just about the lake. The journey passes through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Indian Himalayas. Here are the places that make the experience complete.

Chandratal Lake

At 4,300 metres, Chandratal sits in a natural amphitheatre of barren ridges. The lake is roughly one kilometre around, crescent shaped, and changes colour through the day. Mornings are usually still, with near perfect reflections of the surrounding peaks. The walk from camp is short but deeply memorable because the lake appears suddenly as you crest the final rise.

Kunzum Pass

At roughly 4,590 metres, Kunzum La connects Lahaul to Spiti. A small temple marks the top. The pass offers wide views of snow covered ranges and valley systems on either side. Crossing Kunzum is a defining moment in any Chandratal or Spiti Valley itinerary.

Batal

Not a village so much as a collection of roadside shelters where travellers stop for tea. It sits at the junction between the Chandratal turnoff and the Kunzum route. The landscape is raw and glacial. Batal gives you a real sense of how remote this territory truly is.

Sissu

A green, relatively mild village in Lahaul Valley. Waterfalls, riverside views, and clean guesthouses make it a welcome rest point after the Atal Tunnel. Sissu works well as an acclimatisation stop before pushing to higher altitudes.

Losar

The first village on the Spiti side after crossing Kunzum. The valley opens up, the terrain shifts from grey rock to sandy brown, and the distinct character of Spiti begins. For combined Chandratal and Spiti trips, Losar is the gateway between two very different worlds.

Kaza

The administrative centre of Spiti Valley. Kaza offers fuel, ATMs (often unreliable), basic medical support, and guesthouses. It is also your base for visiting Key Monastery, Pin Valley, Hikkim, and Langza. Adding Kaza to a Chandratal trip brings cultural and spiritual depth to what is already a stunning road journey.

Key Monastery

Perched on a hilltop above the Spiti River, Key is the largest monastery in Spiti. The layered white and ochre structure set against bare mountains is unforgettable. A visit brings spiritual and cultural texture to a Chandratal road trip.

Atal Tunnel

This 9.02 kilometre tunnel below Rohtang connects Manali to Lahaul year round, saving hours of driving on the old Rohtang Pass road. For Chandratal bound travellers starting from Manali, this is where the mountain journey truly begins.

Jispa

A small settlement along the Bhaga River in Lahaul. Jispa works well as an overnight stop with simple and pleasant riverside camps. Many of our itineraries use Jispa as a buffer halt for better acclimatisation.

Best Things to Do on a Chandratal Tour

Camp Under an Open Sky

A night at over 4,200 metres with nothing between you and a canopy of stars is the highlight of most Chandratal trips. The campsites are basic but the sky above them is anything but.

Watch Sunrise at the Lake

Reaching before dawn, when the water is perfectly still, gives you a view that very few places on earth can match. The colour shifts as sunlight touches the ridgelines are slow, quiet, and extraordinary.

Cross Kunzum Pass

Kunzum is one of the most exhilarating stretches in Himalayan travel — unpaved road, raw altitude, prayer flags in cold wind, and vast emptiness in every direction.

Photograph the Night Sky

With zero light pollution and thin high altitude atmosphere, Chandratal is one of the finest astrophotography locations in India. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on clear nights. Even a phone camera can capture the star density up here.

Combine With a Full Spiti Road Trip

Adding Chandratal to a Spiti Valley circuit gives you the lake, the monasteries, the fossil villages, and the cold desert in one continuous journey — which is why it remains our most popular package.

Trek the Rim Trail at Dusk

Walking the rocky path that circles the lake at dusk, the water shifts from turquoise to deep indigo as the peaks catch the last of the sun. Short as it is, it is one of those rare walks you do not forget.

Frequently Asked Questions

A minimum of 3 to 4 days from Manali for a focused Chandratal camping experience. If you want to combine Chandratal with a Spiti Valley tour covering Kaza, Key Monastery, Hikkim, and more, plan for 7 to 10 days.

Yes. This is the most popular route. You drive from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, pass through Lahaul Valley and Batal, then climb to Kunzum Pass and the Chandratal campsite. Total driving time is roughly 7 to 8 hours depending on road conditions.

Chandratal is safe when visited with proper planning. The main risks come from altitude sickness, unpredictable weather, and challenging road conditions. Travelling with an experienced local operator, acclimatising properly, and carrying basic medical supplies reduces these risks significantly.

Usually mid June, depending on Kunzum Pass snow clearance by BRO. The window closes by early to mid October when early snowfall makes the pass impassable. Exact dates vary each year.

Older children (above 10) and fit teenagers can handle it well with a properly paced itinerary. It is not recommended for very young children due to the altitude of 4,300 metres, distance from medical facilities, and basic camping conditions. Talk to our team and we will give you an honest assessment for your specific group.

Yes, at designated campsites located approximately one kilometre from the lake. Camping directly on the lake shore is prohibited by the forest department to protect the fragile ecosystem. All our camping packages use approved campsites.

Unexpected snowfall can happen even in July or August at this altitude. It is more common in late September and early October. Always carry warm layers regardless of which month you visit. Our team monitors weather conditions and adjusts plans accordingly.

Thermals, fleece, a waterproof windproof jacket, trekking shoes with ankle support, sunscreen SPF 50+, UV protection sunglasses, a headlamp or torch, personal medication including basic altitude sickness tablets, and a sleeping bag liner for extra warmth. We send a complete packing checklist to every confirmed booking.

A high clearance SUV like a Mahindra Thar, Toyota Fortuner, or Mahindra Scorpio. Sedans, hatchbacks, and low clearance cars are not suitable for the unpaved Batal to Kunzum stretch. All our packages use reliable SUVs with experienced mountain drivers.

The cost depends on group size, vehicle type, duration, and level of accommodation. A focused 3 night Chandratal camping trip from Manali starts at a different price point than a 9 night full circuit with premium stays. Get in touch with your travel dates, group size, and preferences, and we will share a detailed quote within hours.

No mobile network or ATM at Chandratal. Limited BSNL signal exists in some parts of Lahaul Valley. The nearest reliable ATM is in Manali (Manali side) or Kaza (Spiti side, but often unreliable). Carry sufficient cash for the entire trip. Our packages include all transport and pre arranged stays so cash needs are minimal.

Indian nationals do not need a special permit for Chandratal. However, camping permits from the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department are required for the campsite area. Foreign nationals may require an Inner Line Permit depending on the route. All permits are arranged as part of our packages.

Chandratal Tour Packages

There are places in the Himalayas that make you forget your phone exists. Chandratal Lake is one of them. Sitting at over 4,300 metres in the upper reaches of Lahaul, this crescent shaped high altitude lake holds a colour that photographs never quite capture. The water shifts between turquoise, emerald, and deep grey depending on the hour, the clouds, and the wind. Getting here is part of the experience. The roads are raw, the air is thin, and the silence is so complete it almost has weight.

At Spiti Valley Packages, we design Chandratal tour packages that respect the pace this landscape demands. No assembly line itineraries. Every trip is built around real route conditions, proper acclimatisation, and the kind of local knowledge that only comes from over 12 years of working in these mountains.

What Makes a Chandratal Tour So Special

Chandratal is one of those rare Himalayan destinations where the journey and the arrival carry equal weight. The drive through Lahaul Valley, the crossing at Kunzum Pass, the stark beauty of Batal, and the final walk to the lake create a layered experience that builds over days, not hours.
